We are having a terrible time getting descent hay. I bought a load a week ago of grass/ alfalfa hay. It was horrible ! When the guys at the feed store loaded the bales into our van they kept saying how heavy the bales were. I thought great , we will get more for our money and the bales looked fine from the outside. I got them home to the barn and stacked them with our new handy winch. When I opened a bale to feed it a lot of dirt fell out and it smelled slightly moldy. I thought perhaps the goats could get through it but they wouldn't touch it. I couldn't give it to the horses with dirt in it so the bales had to go back. Again the handy winch we installed worked great . I went back to the feed store to return the bad bales and had to get a wheat hay. We are feeding the wheat hay now but the goats and horses are not excited by it and again the hay is old , not moldy but it does not smell fresh. I guess I am going to have to find a feed store with something better . I wish we had the ground and the water to grow our own. Perhaps I should pull out some of the lavender and grow some hay. At $21.00 dollars a bale we would probably be money ahead.
