Spring is right around the corner and it is time to start getting the goats and horses back in shape and ready for a busy packing season. Our small lavender farm is in California , we don't have distinct season . The weather is pretty stagnant and sunny most of the year but in most of the other parts of the country it is the middle of winter. Our packing animals have been lying  about in their barns and are typically out of shape. It is important to start slowly and have the pack goats and horses slowly get back into shape. Don't get them saddled up and go out for a four mile hike without doing some small short hikes first. Just like humans , animals can pull and strain muscles unless they properly warm up first. Start slowly and go for short jaunts around the farm and build up to longer distances. Before you know it , hiking season will be upon us. Also be sure to check all the girth, breast , and breeching straps on your pack saddle for any signs of wear and tear before the big hike.
