Since most of the United States is in an artic blast I thought I would share a few tricks and ideas for keeping goats warm in the winter season. Some would say I have no idea because we live in California where it does not get very cold in the winter but I do have a few ideas to share. Blankets are the best solution for keeping those goats warm in the cold chill but if you do not have blankets there are some other solutions. Years ago we used old sweatshirts and sweaters with the sleeves cut off . These worked fine , one word of caution make sure to have a proper cut out for the wethers plumbing so the sweater or sweatshirt does not get wet.

If your barn is drafty  cover the outside with a tarp . In the stalls you can place straw bales in a semi circle to help keep out the wind. I would not go over one bale high so they do not fall on the goat. Warm water in the water buckets can also help to keep them warmer. We have used some warm raspberry unsweetned tea in the water buckets and they loved it !

Right now we have an eighteen year old doe,Ginger and keeping her warm in the colder temperatures is a struggle. We keep a blanket on her and in the winter months we put a sweater on under the blanket. Also we keep a deep bed of straw in the stall to make sure she is warm enough.

Our blankets have been selling faster than we can make them but right now we do have an inventory of three blankets ready.

I hope some of these ideas will help to keep our beloved hooved friends warm through this frigid season.
