We have a large wildfire raging in our beautiful state right now . It is very close to Yosemite National Forest. This is a good time to review emergency plans for our animals that we take care of. Because we live in a state with wildfires in the summer and an everlasting threat of a major earthquake , keeping an emergency plan for our animals is very important.
First step we do is : we keep a halter and lead ready by each stall with the goat's name ready to go . This way if we need to gather the herd to evacuate we simply put their halter on a ready to go.
Second: we make sure to have ample feed on hand at all times. We never let our feed get below four bales of hay and a spare bag of grain. In the event of an earthquake or even this last winter a large amount of roads collapsed and we could not get out for several days.
Third: we keep a first aid kit for the goats, horses, dogs, etc. ready to go. We simply keep it in panniers on one of our pack saddles and ready to put on the goat and go with them to safer ground.
These few steps are simple but they are ready employ at a moments notice in case of an emergency.
